...A few years after Van Imhoff's death (November 1, 1750), little was left of his 'improvements' except the large country estate which he had founded at the site of modern Bogor and to which he had given the rather conventional name of 'Buitenzorg' (Sans Souci). He had planned the estate as a country residence for the acting governor-general, but the Directors refused to approve of this 'luxury' and instead granted the new estate to Van Imhoff personally as a free gift. In 1811 it was finally turned to the purpose for which Van Imhoff had planned it, and in the beginning of the 19th century the famous 'Plantentuin', the Government Botanic Garden which was developed into one of the leading botanical institutions of the world, was laid out on its grounds...
